The northern half of the island, St. Martin, is part of the French overseas region. The southern half of the island, known as St. Maarten, became a nation in 2010 and was part of the now dismantled Netherlands Antilles. St Maarten / St Martin is famous for shopping, more than 300 restaurants, an interesting nightlife, fabulous beaches and great anchorages.
